Red Dot Design Award 2017

The Bluetooth speaker Gravity One combines hi-fi sound technology from British sound-pioneer KEF with aesthetic functionalism from Porsche Design. The compact speaker was specially designed for managers and business people to refine the sound experience for conference calls and presentations. The reduced unibody design is made from a single piece of aluminum to combine distinctive aesthetics with a very effective arrangement of the drivers inside.   

DESIGN PROCESS

Brand Analysis

Porsche Design and KEF already collaborated in the past, two brands known for desirable products in the premium segment. The defined goal of the collaboration was to merge KEF´s sound technology and the Porsche Design DNA to create an unmistakable product.

VISION

The Bluetooth speaker should be a functional accessory for managers and business people with a distinctive taste.  Therefore, the product should support use cases in a business environment to refine the quality of conference calls or presentations. Additionally, the speaker should work the private environments as well - a compact and durable speaker which delivers a high-quality sound experience.

IDEATION

Together with a senior designer several ideas were explored and elaborated on, mostly by sketching and CAD Mockups done with Rhinoceros. The ideation process resulted in 3 concepts which were presented to the customer. Due to confidential reasons, only the chosen concept is shown in detail. All shown sketches, renderings and CAD models were done by myself.

FINAL PRODUCT

In a final iteration, the bottom line of the speaker became more dynamic which visually drags the product downwards and also makes the device physically more stable. I am the originator of all shown renderings below, which were done with Keyshot.

MARKET LAUNCH

The Gravity One Bluetooth speaker was launched in 2017 and is available at the market today (see link below). Further, the product received a Red Dot Design Award in the same year. The images shown below are official images of the product I do not own.
